What are Essentail Oils?
Essential Oils (EO’s) are the liquid for and life essence of plant matter. There are a few ways to extact the oil from the leaves, flowers, roots, bark or fruit of a plant.
Do essential oils work with animals?
Essentail oils work very well with dogs and horses, though 1-2% dilutions are recommended. Cats and birds require extra caution as some oils can be toxic to them. Always consult with a qualified aromatherapist before using with animals.
What does it mean to dilute an essential oil?
Dilution means to combine the essntial oils with a carrier oil. For most common uses of EO’s it is appropriate and often necessaryto dilute. If an oil is not diluted it is applied “neat” or “straight” from the bottle.
What is a carrier oil?
A carrier oil, or base oil, is a vegatable or nut oil that is appropriate for topical use and is used to dilute an EO. Common carrier oils are Almond, Coconut, Olive, Jojoba, and Aloe Vera.
How are essential oils applied?
There are 3 primary ways to apply EO’s:
Inhalation which will provide the most immediate effect. EO’s can be inhaled directly or indirectly (diffused).
Topical/External applications of an EO are absorbed through the skin with the use of a carrier oil.
Ingested/Internal use is not recommended unless direct medical supervision.
